Fujifilm MX-1700Z (1999)
Announced by Fujifilm Corp. on 1999-08-26. In Japan this model was called 'Finepix 1700Z' and everywhere else in the world 'MX-1700Z'. According to the press release this model was the world's smallest aluminum / magnesium alloy body with 1.5MP CCD and 3x optical zoom. Fujifilm had researched that easier-to-use models were slowly coming to market and the customers now also included women (!) and middle-aged people. So they chose a more sophisticated design which could fit into a pocket.
Apart from it's elegant design the camera had a lens cover, 3x optical zoom, various recording and playback functions, continuous recording of up to 9 shots at 3 frames per second, various digital filters etc. On the down side was the macro function which was only 25cm.
It is now widely known that this camera was invented by Ferdinand Alexander Porsche and Christian Schwamkrug (under pat. US D457,902). This design was licensed to Leica and Leica used it for their Leica Digilux Zoom.
