Kyocera VP-110 CMOS camera (1997)

On 1997-10-29 Kyocera launched a new portfolio of cell phones. The Datascope series which consisted of the DS-110 and DS-320. The portfolio also featured a palmtop computer. For the cell phone Kyocera developed the VP-110 visual phone adapter, once connected to the phone, Kyocera claimed it to be the world's first handheld videophone. It was demonstrated at the COM JAPAN 1997 fair.

The VP-110 had it's own set of two AAA-batteries and a 210° swivel lens. The entire package allowed video calls over the mobile network but could also be used as a standalone digital camera. Sold in Japan only due to the japanese PHS network restrictions. In 1998 it was awarded a Good Design Award.
