Medium Format Still Video Prototype (1990)

German designer Holger Weyer created and built a prototype for his concept study of a medium format 6x6 still video camera. The camera was sort of a modular camera and had a lot of potential. The highlight certainly was the field monitor. The image on the field monitor was created by the CCD. By using a memory card or video floppy disk, the final image of a recent shot will be displayed on the monitor. The camera also allowed to transmit images over fixed lines and could be attached to a personal computer. Of course images taken with the camera could be played back and deleted.

A few things however made this camera really interesting and ahead of it's time. The field monitor was rotatable and could be detached an used as a remote control. The field monitor and the display module could then be attached together and worn around the wrist! This would allow the photographer to operate his camera in difficult angles or situations. The user could also switch between black and white and color photography. The modular concept allowed the user to operate the camera left or right-handed.

To the right you can see a picture of the inventor and designer Holger Weyer wearing the monitor around his wrist as a bracelet and in front of him the medium format 6x6 still video prototype.
