Fujix DS-220A (1996)

For almost two decades there have been rumours that Fuji re-issued the DS-220 with a serial port as the DS-220A. This information has been distributed by some websites. It's time to clarify this. As you may know by now we don't rely on hear-say and rumours, our website is based on facts unless stated otherwise. We spared no expenses and got ourselves a rare Fujix DS-220A and compared it with the regular Fujix DS-220 and there is no mystery involved.

Fuji did indeed re-issue the DS-220 in 1996 as the DS-220A but not with a serial port as everyone believes. No, the serial port has always been there as the so-called "extension connector". To understand the intentions behind this re-issue we must understand the intentions Fuji had with this camera model. It was marketed as a versatile and modular digital card camera for a variety of applications.

Here is what Fuji added to the DS-220A:

1. they turned the yellow signal jack into a fully fledged video out port so the camera could be connected to an external monitor or directly to the Fujix Fotojoy autochrome printers NC-1 and NC-2
2. the possibility to connect the camera to the Fujix HT-220 transmitter to transmit images over the air (something the DS-220 apparently couldn't according to the manual)
3. an optional wide angle converter WL-D2 that has been unavailable with the DS-220 (the DS-220 came with the MC-D22 macro conversion kit)

So the DS-220A is in fact the finished product as Fuji always visioned it. Please take a look at the exclusive pictures of both the cameras and the manuals above.
