Motorola Roadrunner (2001)

Introduced in 2001 Motorola offered the Roadrunner, a modular digital still camera reference design. The Roadrunner was a modular system that enabled analysis and functional demonstration of a number of digital still camera features with Motorola CMOS image sensors.

This time the camera was using the SoundVision Clarity 4 ASIC, an impoved version of the Clarity 2. The Clarity 4 however was to be replaced by the end of 2001 with the Motorola Anaconda ASIC. It was possible to add a built-in strobe, status and display LCD's and power supply variants as well as audio features. The modularity concept of the design allowed the users to upgrade from a basic still image capture camera to a fully functional digital camera with the addition and/or interchanging of Plug-n-Play boards.

A limited number of Roadrunner reference platforms were produced and supplied to tier 1 Motorola direct customers on an as needed basis. Non direct customers could obtain the platform through Motorola distribution or internal tactical marketing groups on a priority loaner basis.
